Packaging in Moon-Based Industries

Packaging for consumer goods is a major industry on Earth, accounting for a large portion of the effort required (and hence cost) to deliver products to the consumer. It started with baskets, bottles, and cans, and took on a wholly different form the day Thomas Edison invented waxed paper. On the moon, we will need packaging to preserve and display consumer goods as they move from factory to home.

What kinds of packaging will consumer goods need on the moon? Can we design packaging to be recycled efficiently, and so avoid the tremendous problem of solid waste processing that we face on Earth? In a community where metals are plentiful but paper is precious, what forms of packaging will we use? What portion of the lunar community's effort will go into manufacturing and recycling packaging materials?
