Artemis Data Book Directory Structure

The Artemis Data Book has a deeply embedded file structure which follows the outline of the book:

/adb/ -- Artemis Data Book root
      /adb/01/ -- Section 1.
      /adb/01/01/ -- Section 1.1
      /adb/01/01/01/ -- Section 1.1.1.
        .
        .
        .
      /adb/06/ -- Section 6.
      /adb/06/01/ -- Section 6.1
      /adb/06/01/01/ -- Section 6.1.1.
        .
        .
        .
      /adb/a/ -- Appendix A
      /adb/a/01/ -- Appendix A, Section 1.
        .
        .
        .

We set it up this way to keep the files organized, but more importantly to allow for access control to individual areas of the book. That allows for the chairman of each technical committee to have write access to the areas his committee is reponsible for without the risk of giving full access to everybody. We were more worried blunders than mischief, but both are real concerns. Of course, the advent of WebSite Director has overcome a lot of those concerns, but the directory structure has continued to provide us with a scalable architecture for the Artemis Project web and the Artemis Data Book.

Some of these directory structures go very deep, up to 7 levels below /adb.

All links in the Artemis Data Book reference all the way back to top the web root at /. That is, they start with /adb. Images come from the Imagery Library in /images, of course. We coded everything relative to the web root to allow for mirroring. Future versions of WebSite Director should allow us to have everything coded with true relative linking, with links relative to the current document. We haven't implemented that plan yet, though, because it would be a bear to maintain manually.
