Artemis Project Tour Design Guide

We plan improve the accessibility of the Artemis Project web by organizing key documents into tours. The tours provide a simpler way for a new visitor to learn the introductory information without having to undertand the outline structure of the Artemis Data Book.

Each tour provides a series of documents that survey a major topic about the Project. While following the documents on a tour, the visitor is exposed to the hiearchical outline of the Artemis Data Book so that in the future it will be easier to navigate the outline to find more detailed information on a given topic.

Structure

Link structure for Artemis Project tours Tours are organized with the Visitor's Center as the top-level document. This is the home page linked from all points in the tour, and is a first-level link from the main web site home page.

The Visitor's Center provides a selection of several tour topics, and each tour topic is implemented as a web ring with "Next", "Visitors Center", and "Previous" links.

As illustrated between Tour #2 and Tour #3, tour rings may also intersect, in which case there will be two (or more) sets of tour ring navigation aids at the bottom of the document. If an intersecting tour is selected, the new tour will begin at the current document unless "home" is selected. There will not be a direct return to the original tour except through the visitors center or any intersecting pages. See the How to Create and Maintain Web Tours tutorial for detailed instructions on creating these rings.

Also, any document on the web might link into a tour without being part of that tour.

Artemis Society Masthead

Navigational links to points outside the tours can be placed on the left side of the screen as an extension of the masthead in the same manner as the main ASI home page.

The footers will contain navigational aids somewhat like the following. See the guidelines in How to Use Moon Bus Icons in the Tour Nav Bar for complete details.

Acknowledgement

Numerous people have contributed ideas to this guide, including Dale Amon, Greg Bennett, Paul Blase, Douglas Budzak, Tim Cadell, Candace Dicks, Tom Hopper, Simon Rowland, and Tom Wheeler. Crediting each topic individually would distract from the useability of the information, so this has not been done.

In some cases, it was necessary to extensively rewrite or paraphrase the information from the original submissions. (Mostly e-mail discussions) Any errors in that process are my sole responsibility.
