April ECTC Status Report

by Randall Severy <severy@asi.org>
April was a month of transition in the Electronic Communications
Technical Committee, as preparations got underway for moving the Artemis
Project web site to a new server. The new server, purchased by CyberTeams,
will host a dozen domains for organizations affiliated with the Artemis
Project. The new server will allow us to set up new features on the
web site that were not available on the old server. The move will also
resolve the disk quota and mailing list problems that have been occuring recently
on asi.org.
The pending server move put a temporary halt on migrating ASI
mailing lists into Team Director, since the process will be a lot easier on
the new server. And towards the end of April ongoing additions to the web site
exceeded the disk quota available for our account on the web server,
stopping those updates until after the server move is completed.
The ECTC membership remained unchanged in April. You can find
the complete ECTC membership listing at http://www.asi.org/adb/09/01/ectc.html
. As always, there is still a lot of room for new volunteers for ECTC
tasks. If you would like to join the ECTC and help with any of those
tasks, you can use the form on the ECTC task list page at
http://www.asi.org/adb/09/01/ectc_tasks.html
.
Here is the latest status information from the individual work
areas within the ECTC:
Membership Support
Eight ASI members signed up for Team Director accounts in April.
Several more ASI committees began preparations for migrating their
mailing lists into Team Director, but the actual migration won't take place
until after the server move is complete.
Help Desk
Nanci's sister, Dawna, continued manning the Communications and
Information Center in Nanci's absence.
Electronic Mailing Lists
Bobby Will continued to encounter delays in responses from IO about
configuration issues with some of the ASI mailing lists, notably the
ownership of the art-3d list. Vik Olliver set up a temporary art-3d
mailing list outside of the asi.org domain until we can get the official
list working properly again. Since Bobby will have access to all aspects
of the mailing list configurations on the new server, we expect to
leave these problems behind after the move.
World Wide Web Server
Until the disk quota restrictions brought updates to a halt, the
Artemis Project web site continued to grow in April, with a total of
91 updates published to the site, including 61 new documents and 30
modifications to existing documents. The latest updates bring the total
number of documents on the web site to 2513 HTML documents and the
number of GIF and JPEG images increased to a total of 1110 images. Most of
the work in editing and approving the updates was done by John Wertz, Tom
Merkle, Candace Dicks, Luanne Jorewicz, Gregory Bennett, John Peel,
Jim Sealy Jr, Dale Gray, Leah Simpson, and Predrag Lezaic. Updates were
also submitted by Jens Lerch, Scotty Gammenthaler, and Rhoda Bryant.
Many of the updates were part of the new Frontier Status Reports
archive on the Artemis Project web site. That archive is being organized
by Jim Sealy, Jr. and features the Frontier Status reports written
by Dale Gray. Scotty Gammenthaler completed a Tour Design Guide that will be
used in implementing Web Site Tours on the Artemis Project web site.

11th, to avoid the Easter holiday. A total of eleven people showed
up for some or all of the meeting and discussed a variety of ECTC projects,
especially the Web Site Tour and Artemis Project Site Design updates.
The site design discussion spilled over into the Web Team meeting, which
featured discussions on improving the layout and navigation aspects
of the Artemis Project web site.
