June ECTC Status Report
The summer doldrums continued for the Electronic Communications
Technical Committee in June, as activity slowed to a crawl. The ASI web
site saw most of the activity, as the Web Team continued the never-ending
process of submitting and approving new updates for the ASI web site.
The ECTC grew by two new members in June, as three new members joined,
making up for the departure of Henry Mannetje, who was removed from the
mailing list after mail to him started bouncing. The new members are
Su'Ratt, David Wetnight, and Jinhee Moon. At the end of June, the ECTC had
27 active members, with another 51 people in the Observer or Rep
categories. You can find the complete ECTC membership listing, including
ICQ numbers, at http://www.asi.org/adb/09/01/ectc.html . As always, there
is still a lot of room for new volunteers for ECTC tasks. If you would
like to join the ECTC and help with any of those tasks, you can use the
form on the ECTC task list page at
http://www.asi.org/adb/09/01/ectc_tasks.html .
Here is the latest status information from the individual work areas
within the ECTC:
Help Desk
Nanci Brasket continued manning the Comm and Info Center.
Listserver Mailing Lists
E-mail traffic on the artemis-list and microlander-team mailing lists
continued the high volume from May, and many of the other ASI mailing lists
saw activity this past month. There were no configuration changes needed
for any of the ASI lists during the past month.
World Wide Web Server
The focus of updates to the ASI web site changed this past month to
cleaning up the existing content on the site. A temporary hold was put on
any new additions to the site while the Missing Links project and other
editing efforts focused on improving the existing content on the site.
This hold also allowed the Web and Editing teams some breathing room to
catch up on the backlog of requests going through the ASI web system, which
by the end of June had the smallest number of requests waiting to be
processed in quite a few months.
During June, a total of 119 updates were published to the ASI web
site, including 8 new documents, 64 modifications to existing documents, 44
deleted documents, and 3 moved documents. The latest updates bring the
total number of documents on the ASI web site to 2121 HTML documents and
846 GIF and JPEG images. Most of the work in editing and approving the
updates was done by Greg Bennett, John Wertz, Richard Perry, Luanne
Jorewicz, Charles Collier, Simon Rowland, Candace Dicks, Ian Randal Strock,
Leah Simpson, Randall Severy, Jeremy Kraemer, and Paul Blase.
The Web Team projects were again a key topic at the June ECTC IRC
meeting, along with a discussion about the ADB Outline. John Peel updated
the header and footer templates yet again. John Wertz generated a new set
of Missing Links reports and updated the missing link task assignments
during the IRC meeting.

Online Services
Vik Olliver has seen a lot of interest in the Artemis Project on
CompuServe in the past month, despite a shrinking CompuServe user
community. Some comments were made about the original timelines for the
project, and several people inquired about investment opportunities.
Real-time Meetings
The June ECTC IRC meeting was held on June 7 and matched the turnout of
the previous month with nine attendees. Several of the attendees were new
to the ECTC IRC meetings, which kept the meeting from being only a
repetition of past meetings. Some key members of the ECTC were missing,
however, so many of the active ECTC tasks could not be reviewed. An
announcement was made at the meeting that Candace Dicks had accepted the
job of ECTC Administrator, and she will be helping out Randall with ECTC
membership and administrative activity. As has been the case in past ECTC
meetings, the Web Team projects saw most of the discussion, especially the
Missing Links project and the New Member/Renewal form.
Miscellaneous
It was a slow news month for Tom Wheeler's first full month as ASI
Newsmonger. Tom is always looking for additional writers and contacts in
other ASI committees to provide activity reports. If you have any
information that would be useful for an ASI Online News article, or if you
would like to write for the Online News, contact Tom at
"newsmonger@asi.org".
