LTV Medical System
Bioinstrumentation System (BIS)
Description:
This system is essentially an Electrocardiogram (ECG)
monitor. It allows the real-time or delayed transmission of the crew
members' life-signs to Mission Control. In Space Shuttle operations this
system is primarily used for launch and re-entry. It is, however,
available for use in zero-g operations and in extra-vehicular
activities (EVA). It is envisioned that this system would be available on the
LTV primarily for emergency medical care. The system may also prove
useful for EVA operations; in particular for longer duration missions
(as opposed to the Reference Mission).
Contents of BIS kit:
The kit contains all the articles required for use of
the ECG monitor. The kit case has Velcro on its bottom so that it can be
attached to the LTV walls/table while in use.
- 3 electrodes (all wired together)
- labelled for Upper and Lower chest and Ground
- wet wipes
- adhesive tape
- electrode paste
- instruction cue card
Envisioned Sizes:
The entire system should be contained in one pouch
measuring 7" x 5" x 4".
Note: this size is an estimate only; actual data have yet
to be determined.
Proposed Location:
Storage within a locker designated for medical
equipment.
Medications and Bandage Kit (MBK)
Description:
The MBK is a kit containing non-injection medications,
and bandaging for minor injuries. The items contained in this kit are
intended for use in non-emergency situations.
Contents of MBK:
The kit is divided into three different layers. Each
layer contains items as listed below. Every layer is designated by a
particular letter which will aide in the location of items as crew
members and ground controllers alike will be able to refer to the layer
letter when discussing where to get a particular item.
The kit will have Velcro on its bottom so that it can be
attached to the LTV walls/table when in use.

Note: this size is an estimate only; actual data have yet
to be determined.
Proposed Location:
Storage within a locker designated for medical
equipment.
Emergency Medical Kit (EMK)
Description:
The EMK is a kit containing injection medications,
diagnostic and therapeutic items, and items necessary for minor surgery.
The items contained in this kit are intended for use in emergency
situations.
Contents of EMK:
The kit is divided into four different layers. Each
layer contains items as listed below. Every layer is designated by a
particular letter which will aide in the location of items as crew
members and ground controllers alike will be able to refer to the layer
letter when discussing where to get a particular item.
The kit will have Velcro on its bottom so that it can be
attached to the LTV walls/table when in use.
