Duty on Extraterrestrial Imports to the United States
U.S. customs has established their procedure for handling
cargo shipped into the country via extraterrestrial transport. They had
to
do that when a Japanese company, USEF, had a satellite launched from Japan
and recoved by a Space Shuttle.
How much duty we'll have to pay on goods imported from the moon
depends on
the success of current campaigns in the Congress to get a tax break for
lunar entrepreneurs. In the long run, who knows? Whatever import duties
turn out to be, if any, they won't be so high that it breaks the business
unless the imported goods compete directly with locally manufactured
goods.
I think we can leave that for future generations to worry about.
